The show will be adapted by Celeste Hughey (Palm RoyaleDead to MeHigh Fidelity), with Seth MacFarlane and Brian Grazer serving as executive producers. Grazer’s Imagine Entertainment, which produced the original film, will also be involved, with Dana Olsen, the original film's writer, co-executive producing.

The series will be shot on the Universal Studios backlot, the same location used for the 1989 film, which starred Tom Hanks, Carrie Fisher, Bruce Dern, Rick Ducommun, and Corey Feldman. In the original movie, suburban residents become suspicious of their new neighbors, believing them to be involved in dark, ritualistic activities. Although The 'Burbs grossed over $49 million on an $18 million budget, it has since gained a cult following.

According to the series' official logline, it will be set in modern-day suburbia and follow a young couple who move back to the husband’s childhood home. Their peaceful life is disrupted by mysterious new neighbors, uncovering old secrets and introducing new, deadly threats to their seemingly quiet neighborhood.
