Born DeQuantes Devontay Lamar in Atlanta, Georgia, Rich Homie Quan grew up excelling in baseball and attended Ronald E. McNair High School in DeKalb County, where he also developed a passion for creative writing. In a 2018 essay for Talkhouse, Quan credited his teacher Miss Butch for nurturing his love for writing, explaining how she encouraged him to close his eyes and let his thoughts flow freely. These early poems would later become the foundation for his music.

After high school, Quan found himself incarcerated, where he began to focus on reading, writing, and honing his rapping skills. In a 2014 interview with XXL magazine, after being named to the Freshman Class, he reflected on how his time in jail helped him rediscover his love for literature and inspired his transition from writing poems to creating rhymes. Shortly after his release, he dropped his first mixtape, I Go In on Every Song (2012), followed by Still Goin In and Still Goin In - Reloaded, which featured his breakthrough single, “Type of Way.” The track became a major hit, reaching No. 50 on the Billboard Hot 100 and showcasing Quan’s unique voice, blending triumph with deep emotion.

Quan’s success as a solo artist was further solidified through collaborations with other notable artists. He appeared on tracks like YG’s “My N***a” and Yo Gotti’s “I Know,” but his biggest moment came when he teamed up with Young Thug under the Rich Gang collective, curated by Cash Money Records co-founder Birdman. Their 2014 hit “Lifestyle” became a defining track of the era, and the subsequent mixtape, Rich Gang: Tha Tour Pt. 1, would influence the sound of Atlanta and hip-hop throughout the 2010s.

Although Rich Homie Quan and Young Thug eventually parted ways, Quan continued to make his mark with hits like 2015’s “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh),” which peaked at No. 26 on the Billboard charts. His debut studio album, Rich as in Spirit, was released in 2018 via Motown Records. He later dropped the Family & Mula EP and its deluxe version in 2022. Earlier this summer, Quan reunited with fellow Atlanta rapper 2 Chainz for the single “Ah’chi.”

Following his passing, several artists have expressed their condolences on social media, including Jacquees, 9th Wonder, and 2 Chainz, who shared, “Dam lil brother, we just spoke about shooting a video 💙, special prayer for you and your family, and pray for any and everybody that’s dealing with something 🙏🏿 my condolences bru.”
