Nearly 10,500 Arrested in 14 Days

From Monday afternoon until yesterday afternoon, law enforcement agencies have arrested 303 people in various places across the country. In total, as of yesterday, information has been obtained that 10,431 people have been arrested nationwide in the last 14 days.

The movement demanding reforms in the quota system for government jobs began on July 1. After the clashes at Dhaka University on July 15, the student movement spread across the country. From the following day, various incidents of attacks, clashes, vandalism, arson, and casualties occurred in different areas centered around the movement. In various places, law enforcement agencies have been conducting arrest operations by filing cases related to these incidents.

Since July 17, Prothom Alo correspondents have been collecting information on cases and arrests from metropolitan, district, and police station sources across the country. In addition to new arrests, if information on previously arrested individuals is found, it is added to the count. A significant portion of those arrested in various districts, including Dhaka, are leaders and activists of the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami and their affiliated organizations. Leaders of various parties and organizations involved in the joint movement with the BNP are also being arrested. Along with political leaders and activists, there have been instances of students being arrested. However, the police claim that only those involved in sabotage and violence are being arrested.

According to sources from Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), 30 people were arrested in the capital from 12 PM last Monday to 12 PM yesterday. This brings the total number of arrests in the capital to 2,850. As of yesterday, a total of 264 cases have been filed in the capital.

Outside the metropolis, 23 cases have been filed in Dhaka's Dhamrai, Savar, Ashulia, Keraniganj, Nawabganj, and Dohar police stations as of yesterday. The police arrested one person in these areas yesterday. In total, 267 people have been arrested under these police stations.
